Dungate Manor Residents Join Adopt A Grandparent Programme
Residents at Dungate Manor Care Home in Reigate have been taking part in a lovely new initiative and it’s already making a real difference.

The ‘Adopt a Grandparent’ programme matches residents with dedicated volunteers for regular one-to-one video calls, helping to build genuine friendships across the generations. And since launching, it’s quickly become something residents really look forward to, a chance to share stories, have a laugh and feel connected to someone outside of the home.

One friendship that’s already blossoming is between resident Patricia Hill and her volunteer companion, Annie. In their very first call, the two found out they had a lot in common, chatting about their interests, hobbies and life experiences with an ease that felt like they’d known each other for years. Patricia was visibly delighted and is already counting down to their next catch-up.

Fena, Lifestyle Coordinator at Dungate Manor, has been there to see it unfold.

“It’s been incredibly moving to see our residents light up during these calls. For many, it’s not just a conversation. It’s something they look forward to. A real sense of being seen and heard.”

For residents living with dementia, regular, meaningful interaction is more important than many people realise. It can help stimulate memory, improve mood and alleviate the isolation that many experience. Alongside the emotional wellbeing benefits, it’s equally rewarding to see real friendships forming.

And as Fena points out, the joy goes both ways.

“The volunteers gain so much too. It’s a two-way relationship built on kindness, curiosity and authentic human connection.”
